Jan Schwarz is associate professor of Yiddish studies at Lund University, Sweden.He is the author of Imagining Lives: Autobiographical Fiction of Yiddish Writers (2005) and recently of Survivors and exiles: Yiddish after the Holocaust (2015), as well as numerous critical articles about Jewish life-writing, Holocaust Literature, modern Yiddish culture, and Jewish American literature. He is also the translator of Scholem-Aleichem’s Tevye the Dairyman into Danish (2009). Currently he is working on a monograph about I.B.Singer that is supported by a three year grant from the Swedish Research Council. He is also at work on a Danish translation of Avrom Sutzkever’s prose work.

Sessionsbeskrivning: Jan Schwarz will present preliminary results from his research project about the Nobel prize winning writer Isaac Bashevis Singer, or Yitskhok Bashevis as he is known in Yiddish. Based on documents, sound recordings and images from the Singer archive at the University of Texas, the presentation will give an overview of the novelist and storyteller’s bilingualism, translation practice and status as world literary figure.

Sessionsbeskrivning: Jan Schwarz examines in texts, images and sound how a cadre of survivor and exile writers created a dynamic Yiddish culture in the two and a half decades after the Holocaust. It will be shown how Yiddish writers and cultural organizations maintained a staggering level of activity in fostering publications and performances, collecting archival and historical materials, and launching young literary talents.
